Stories of Home was MOCA’s second activation, a pop-up exhibition on the ground floor of 744 George Street that opened to a crowd stretching around the corner. It marked the launch of MOCA’s new identity, its new website, and the Stories of Home digital portal.
At its heart was a single question: what does home mean to you? A group of Chinese Australians started the conversation by sharing their own answers, among them Jane Lu, Chris Yee, Brian and Vincent Wu, Rainbow Chan and Louise Zhang. Their portraits and objects were installed between the old library bookshelves, using the building’s own architecture to tell the story. A short film made with RG/A and PUSH Media anchored the space.
Around 500 people visited over the course of the pop-up. The project went on to become Australia’s only crowd-sourced oral history project focused on home, inviting anyone to add their own story. It was supported by the City of Sydney, Create NSW, and the National Foundation for Australia China Relations.
