One object | 一物

25/11/2021 - 27/02/2022

Museums use objects to tell stories.

While the Museum of Chinese in Australia (MOCA) is currently a museum without objects, it will eventually be an institution that collects, preserves and displays items of cultural and social significance. Regardless of the absence of this traditional collection, it is in the resonance of the object that the significance of a museum like MOCA is contained.

Acknowledging our beginnings and the importance of the object as the embodiment of personal and collective experience, MOCA has commissioned Chinese Australian photographer Ken Leanfore to produce a series of portraits exploring this relationship. Told through the lens of ten Chinese Australian families and the objects they have selected, this exhibition explores their deeply personal connection to an object, its history and the stories it represents.

Subjects include: Gwenda Bau, Douglas Chang, Jeff Fatt, King Fong OAM, Trystan Go, Lilian Lai, Bill Ling, Elizabeth Pakchung, Claudia Chan Shaw, Siaoman Yen.

These portraits highlight the connection between material culture, memory, family history and identity. They reveal the diverse stories of the Chinese Australian experience through the lens of One object.
